Basic user here on free plan.
Created a 2nd project and now the timeline views disappeared in both projects with a message that I need to set a default filter to only show issues from each project. Why is this not the default - I guess since the alternative requires me to sign up for a paid plan (which is what is shown on a promo message on the page) so it is made more difficult to keep same functionality on a free plan...
Anyways, how do I do this exactly to see a timeline for each project that only shows the issues for each project? I read up on other posts here and it shows to create custom filter to show issues for a single project only on Kanban board. So I did that with 'project = <name of my project>'. I can select this custom filter on the board but do not see any 'Save' button so filter settings disappears when changing the page. Note that I created a sprint so I assume the board applies to the sprint.
Again this is needlessly difficult. Common sense would be for the default to show for each project only issues of that project.

I am not sure what steps you have taken here, but it seems as if you have somehow created a board and used a filter as the source of this board instead of the project itself.
If you do create a new Jira project from an Atlassian template, this is not the default behaviour. A new project comes with a board limited to that project's scope and it shows the timeline by default - for the connected project. So I am quite sure you have done some manipulations that may not have been necessary, causing the behaviour you see.
Just a couple of things here:
- If you want a separate board for each project, with a separate timeline for that project only, that is perfectly possible on a free plan (and default behaviour when you create a new project). I'll resume this right away ...
- If you want to have a single board with issues from multiple projects, that is possible with a free plan too, but it does indeed disable the timeline feature. For timelines across multiple projects, you would need the advanced Plans feature from the premium plan.
Resuming the first case, I would assume you now have 2 Jira projects, each with its own board. Assuming these arecompany managed projects, each board has a board filter that you should be able to locate on the General tab of the board configuration.
If your first project was called Project A, do the following to fix your timeline:
- Locate the board associated with Project A
- Navigate toConfigure Board > General
- ClickEdit filter query where you see the board filter presented as JQL
- Update to Project = "Project A"ORDER BY Rank ASC(replace Project A with your real project's name obviously).
- Run the query in the issue navigator and click theblueSave filter link.
- Return to your board settings and check theTimelinetab to ensure this is enabled
After that, you should have a working timeline just for your project A. Repeat the same steps for project B.

I have a free plan in one of my instances and I was able to get the timeline to work.
Please can you check your configuration? Basically the timeline is just another view of the board.
Here I have a very simple board with a few issues
Then, when I go to "configure board", it should be possible to switch on the timeline view and to include children issues in the view or not
With this configuration, I can see the Epics and their linked Stories in the timeline
What is your configuration? How is it different?
